ASN Retail Case Study 1

ASN Retail in Derby traded under the name of Bargain Booze.

On the 20 August 2013 while the shop was closed, a spread throughout the ground floor of the premises, also causing severe smoke damage to the flat above.

The fire rendered stock unsaleable and severely affected the display shelving, fridges, freezers and chillers. The internal building had also been considerably damaged with work required to the ceiling, electrics, tiling, flooring and walls. Thompson & Bryan were recommended to the insured through their broker and we immediately arranged to start work on the claim.

We met the loss adjuster appointed by the client’s insurer and agreed a plan of action. An inventory of the damaged fixtures and fittings was produced together with a schedule of the stock.

Financial information was obtained to support the ongoing business interruption claim and we arranged for a surveyor to visit site and prepare repair schedules that would be sent out to tender.

Policy liability was soon accepted and the fixtures and fittings and stock claims were agreed. Building tenders were returned, contractors appointed and repairs undertaken.

The clients chose to alter the layout of the premises to provided additional retail space. The store changed from Bargain Booze, which was predominantly alcohol sales, to a fully-fitted Nisa convenience store.

An advertising plan and budget was agreed with the loss adjuster and on the 1 March 2014, the store re-opened.

By utilising the funds obtained from insurers, the clients were able to improve the layout and size of the store and re-open in a completely different format that would be beneficial to them in the long term.
