Serious fire at Exeter Almhouse
A serious fire took place at 14 Atwell Palmer Almshouses, Exeter on 21st August 2018. The fire was caused by a carelessly discarded smoking material and the occupant was injured and taken to hospital. Thompson & Bryan were appointed a week later and one of our team meet with the loss adjusters on site on 28th August.
The building suffered serious structural damage. We liaised with the loss adjuster to explain the circumstances and agree the way forward. We also discussed with EHT’s structural engineer to agree the scope of the fire damages together with costing.
Following various meetings, a claim was formalised and presented with all appropriate support. After further meetings with the loss adjuster agreement was reached, discussed with the client and a payment proposal was submitted to insurers for a BACS payment to be made in the agreed sum. The whole process was concluded in a little over 2 months to the satisfaction of all parties.
Steve Sitch, the general Manager of the Almshouse Charity said that he found T&B’s “efficiency, effectiveness and professionalism exemplary”.
“From the date of the fire to the date when EHT’s loss was reimbursed by our insurers (just about 2 calendar months) you have been attentive to detail, meticulous in your approach and realistic and equitable in advising EHT on a settlement figure being acceptable to us and insurers,” he said.
