Retail Store – Herefordshire

Fire Loss & Resultant Business Interruption

A major fire originating in a High Street store spread to adjoining properties, including one occupied by a leading national retail health and beauty brand. Thompson & Bryan are retained by the Policyholder client and have represented them for over 20 years.

What We Did

Our technicians visited the site to evaluate the extent of damage and develop a plan of action in terms of reopening the store as soon as possible. Immediate issues included making the adjacent building safe and preventing debris from falling onto our client’s premises. Simultaneously, we liaised with Insurers to secure approval to clear the smoke-damaged stock inside, via salvage dealers following which, decontamination specialists could remediate the extensive soot and smoke damage.

A priority for the client was to reopen their pharmacy ASAP; this being an important service for the local community. In consultation with the client’s property team, a plan was devised to partition off an area enabling safe customer access to the pharmacy only, enabling dispensing services to resume within 2 weeks. The reinstatement of the store fit out and stock replenishment were also fast tracked, enabling the store to fully reopen within 6 weeks.

The Outcome

We liaised with Insurers and the landlords regarding reinstatement cost allocation which, together with the assessment of stock and business interruption, produced an overall negotiated settlement exceeding £350K.

Client Testimonial

The client was delighted with our efforts and on receipt of our confirmation that settlement had been agreed, including reimbursement of our fees, their Insurance Manager wrote… ‘Thank you for the update and great result on the claim prep costs, T&B always do us proud!
