Our expert team is ready for your COVID-19 claims

It’s only a week or so since we set out our initial thoughts on claims resulting from the virus. In that time the government has introduced relief measures for various businesses, locked the country down and set out its suppression strategy.

It has also been a hectic week for us at Thompson and Bryan. In that time we’ve had a deluge of enquiries and claims, every one of which has been carefully looked at in the context of its individual policy wording and terms, and its own circumstances.

That’s been a task that we, fortunately, have the resources for. Knowing the importance of fast response for our broker friends and their clients, we’ve worked all hours and we now have a pretty exhaustive understanding of policy covers. These are very diverse.

They differ in whether or not they define diseases and if so, how They have different approaches to premises, wide area and public authority closure risks They sometimes have clauses that we’re pretty sure even they don’t understandAnd different insurers exhibit very different attitudes to Covid claims

We now have an extensive database and knowledge that help us to analyse the enquiries much more quickly than a week ago. All this has been achieved with daily hour-long remote team meetings.

We have also identified areas of imprecise wording and difficulty that we think might be contentious and worth formal dispute procedures. So we’re in discussion with a couple of law firms with expertise in policy interpretation to see how such cases might be fought economically.

Yes, it’s been a long week. It’s been hard work. But we think we’re much better equipped in all sorts of ways than we were a week ago. And, despite the pressures and the long hours, the challenge and what we’ve done so far are very rewarding. We’ll keep you informed regularly of what we’re doing to serve your clients.

In the meantime, if you think a client has a claim, notify insurers at once, and we’ll deal with the analysis as soon as you get it to us.

Our experience in claims preparation and negotiation will be invaluable at a critical time when your client needs our services.
